A small building is shown on the Ordnance Survey six inch to one mile maps of 1882 and 1911 (see 2 & 3) fronting onto Mill Lane. It was demolished in 1929, along with the smithy and Post Office, when the A523 was widened. Excavation revealed the remains of the building. The earliest phase comprised the eastern portion of a rectangular stone structure measuring 5m north-south and in excess of five meters and 5.4m east-west, built of sandstone slabs. The building was extended eastwards by the addition of a brick wing, probably in the early nineteenth century. The wing measured 3m east-west by 3.25m north-south. Two brick ash-pits were identified. The whole site was severely truncated probably during demolition. A large pit to the south contained dark humic soil and Victorian rubbish. A single sherd of a medieval jug (fourteenth to fifteenth century) was found in redeposited sand, outside the building.
