Full Description
<1> Leah, MD; Wells, CE; Appleby, C; Huckerby, E, 1997, The Wetlands of Cheshire (North West Wetlands Survey 4), CH87, CH88; p.138-9, Fig 85 (Monograph). SCH3260.
A sub-squarish mound (CH87) measuring 24m across, standing c.1m high, which lies c.300m to the south of the mere, and a group of three sunken linear features (CH 88) overlooking the west shores of the mere.
<2> de Figueiredo P & Treuherz J, 1988, Cheshire Country Houses, /63 (Book). SCH785.
The southern most of the three may be a natural feature, but the other two, which both measure 6m across and have external banks appear to be wholly artificial. It is known the land around the mere was extensively landscaped and the mere enlarged in the 19th century
<3> Various, Cheshire History, 1988, Williams R, 21/21 (Journal/Periodical). SCH811.
Survival of ridge and furrow to the west of the mere 7m across, indicates that not all of the early features were destroyed by the 19th century landscaping.
