Full Description
Somerford park, an 18th century house enlarged in several stages. Nucleus dated c1720 when Peter Shakerley moved here from Hulme Hall, Allostock. Hall extended during 18th century by TF Pritchard and c1800 was enlarged by Lawrence Robinson of Middleton, Lancs, who had been associated with the Wyatt family. At right angles to the 9-bay earlier house he added a rectangular block with canted ends and a 2 storey domed bow. A matching block was built at the other end. The additions were for CWJ Shakerley between 1790 and 1797. His grandson Sir Charles Watkin Shakerley enlarged the house, who added a heavy Italianate porch. Hall demolished in 1927 (1). Foundations of the hall revealed in March 1998 during construction work. Photos in SMR (2).
