Full Description
A copper alloy trumpet brooch (late 1st/early 2nd century) with relief curvilinear decoration at the flared end. A most unusual feature is the rosette attached to this end. It has not been possible to parallel this - but it is comparable to a trumpet brooch from Cumbria which had a rosette attached to its loophead. It is not clear whether the Middlewich brooch had the rosette cast in place, or whether it was origianlly like the Cumbrian brooch, but with its rosette subsequently becoming corroded to the body of the brooch. Prominent triple moulding at neck of bow. Fluted decoration running along bow to flared terminal. Remains of spring corroded into flared end. Remains of catch-plate. L 50mm x W 14 mm. Found by metal detector (1).
