Full Description
3 trenches in 1997. Trench 3 revealed Post medieval refuse pits and 2 medieval ditches. Medieval features: U-shaped ditch 0.60m wide (context 17) with 5 frags of 14th century pottery. NW-SE alignment of ditch may indicate an earlier street line. This ditch cut an earlier ditch (contect 16). running Ne-SW before turning to run E-W and terminating in a bulbous rear end. Post Medieval features consist of 2 pits and a large sub-rectangular pit/ditch terminal (which cut ditch context 17). 3 stakeholes clustered in the centre of the ditch terminal. The ditch terminal and associated stake holes suggest a structure dating to the 17th/18th century and interpreted as a possible garden feature or latrine pit. Present site on 3 terraces but original topography was only steeply sloped in the east of the site, levelling out to the west, to create a gently sloping natural terrace, at a level c.1010m below the current ground level. 3rd terrace has been artificially created and the natural ground surface into which medieval and early post medieval features has been cut is protected by 1.1m thick deposit of topsoil (1).
