Summary

Woodlake House, Bolesworth Rd. Formerly farmhouse, now house. Mid 16th century, remodelled & exterior fabric dated 1683 for Charles Hurst, 20th century extensions & alterations. Rendered Flemish bond brick, stone dressings. Welsh slate roof, 2 brick chimneys. L-shaped plan, 2 & 3 storey.

Full Description

Woodlake House, Bolesworth Rd. Formerly farmhouse, now house. Mid C16, remodelled & exterior fabric dated 1683 for Charles Hurst, C20 extensions & alts. Rendered Flemish bond brick, stone dressings. Welsh slate roof, 2 brick chimneys. L-shaped plan, porch in angle. 2 & 3 storey, 3 bay NE front. Chamfered stone plinth, quoins; band lst flr & stone-coped gables, finials on kneelers. Central bay projects under gable with 3-light casements. Right end bay of 2 storeys, left end bay addition. NW front has 3-storey gabled porch with keeler & scroll. Bead-moulded doorcase, flat hood has CDH 1683 carved on lintel. Int: Entry into main room. Large ashlar inglenook fireplace, ovolo-moulded firebeam. This mould is on doorcase, ceiling beams with quirk & tongue stop & frieze round half of room. Alongside fire is reset early C17 flat baluster stair. To left is parlour through chamfered wooded case with studded 3-board battered door with vertical wooden pegs, not hinges. Small room to rear of fireplace has panelling under stairwell, chequered frieze & setting for diamond mullioned grille. Upstairs, partition walls timber framed & main room has ovolo-moulded ceiling beams & moulded stone corner fireplace. A Tudor house remodelled 1683 to give an odd plan with many early fittings surviving. Full architectural description (1).
