Summary

An early Bronze Age shafthole stone axe was found during harvesting at Manor Farm. It is made from fine grained micaceous sandstone. It is shorter than usual what suggests it may have been re-ground when the original cutting edge became damaged. It also has minor surface damage which is probably the result of agricultural activity.

Full Description

Early Bronze Age shafthole axe found october 1997 during harvesting at Manor Farm. L 17.6cm W 10.5 cm max thickness 6.3cm. Hour glass perforation 3.3cm diameter at narrowest point. made from a fine grained micaceous sandstone. The oblique cutting edge and dumpy proportions of this suggest the original implement may have been longer but was re-ground when the original cutting edge became damaged. Minor surface damage probably the result of agricultural activity (1).
