Full Description
Possible site of medieval market place. In 1367-8 Sir William Brereton was granted a charter conferring upon him the rights to hold a market and fair at Brereton. The market was to be held on a Thursday whilst the annual fair was held on the feast of St Peter (1). Staging of the marketappears to have been a speculative venture, described as a 'total failure' (2). Market and fairs appear to have lapsed by the post medieval period. Likely location for the market was the triangular area at the junction of Newcastle Road North, Newcastle Road South and the road leading to Brereton Hall (3).
