Full Description
Four cut sections of a Roman lead salt pan. Like the Shavington pan (Britannia vol xxvii) this had originally been cut into eight approximately equal-sized fragments for scrap. The four surviving fragments consist of two contiguous sections from two diagonally opposite corners of the pan. The two pairs of fragments were found approximately 5m apart located in separate pits - one section stacked on top of the other in each case. Original pan dimensions approximately 107cm x 90cm x 12cm. Fragmentary remains of suspension holes and strengtheners on opposing pan walls. Inscription in relief on one wall LVTAMI. Found by metal detector on the 15th and 16th April after initial stripping of the surface by contractors on the site. Two fragments are held by the Salt Museum , the other two awaiting collection by the finder (1)
