Summary

Late bronze age unlooped palstave, with plain faces. The edge of the blade is broken and the butt end broken. A palstave is a type of bronze age cast in a two piece mould. It has flanges to allow a wooden or bone handle to be hafted to the axe and a ridge in the centre to stop the handle being forced forwards during use. Some types have a loop to aid the hafting.

Full Description

Late bronze age unlooped palstave, with plain faces. Found with a metal detector, approximately 2-3 inches deep and 2 feet away from the field boundary (1). End of blade broken, butt end broken. Stop ridge. Surface pitted. Length c.73mm and maximum width across blade c.35mm. photograph.
