Full Description
Wilderspool causeway built 1624.The sessions at Chester recorded that repairs to Warrington Bridge (448/1/2) would be useless, unless there was a causeway made with arches, from Wilderspool to the bridge. Local landowners gave the site for the causeway. 1848 - causeway was raised & excavation revealed a former 'pavement' at the level of the nearby fields & showed that the causeway had been raised more than once(1). 1957 - water main excavation enabled Mr G.A.Carter, Chief Librarian of Warrington to photograph arches built of sandstone blocks beneath the present road. Causeway now a modern road(2). From c.SJ 60778754 to 61228685.
