Monument record 448/1/1 - Wilderspool Causeway

Please read our .

Summary

Wilderspool causeway was built in 1624. The sessions at Chester recorded that repairs to Warrington Bridge would be useless, unless there was a causeway made with arches, from Wilderspool to the bridge. Local landowners gave the site for the causeway. In 1848 the causeway was raised and excavation revealed a former 'pavement' at the level of the nearby fields and showed that the causeway had been raised more than once. In 1957 a water main excavation enabled the photography of the arches built of sandstone blocks beneath the present road. The causeway is now a modern road. From c.SJ 60778754 to 61228685.
