Summary

In 1980 an extensive Christian cemetery and church were revealed around and over a Bronze Age burial mound. Several hundred grave slots were excavated, but only a few bones survived due to the soil conditions. At least 3 phases of use were distinguished. A Church was tentatively identified by tracing the gaps in the intricate interlocking pattern of graves where its walls once stood. This would have given a church 4m wide and 8m long. Quarrying has now swept away the site of the excavation and the surrounding area.

Southworth Hall Farm barrow was covered and surrounded by an extensive cemetery pf which more than 1200sqm were excavted in 1980. No boundary found. Few bones but over 800 grave slots and three phases of use were distinguished.

There is no evidence for a church of any size on the site although it is just possible that in the NE ocorner there survive traces oif some small structure 4m wide and at least 8m long in the form of three lines at rightangles between the graves. Early medieval date suggested though no dating evidence,
