Summary

The remains of a road were found approximately 250mm below the surface in 1969. The road surface was composed of gravel, pebbles and sandstone chippings mixed with sand with a thin discontinuous black layer near the base. The road was 7.35 metres wide with an average of thickness of about 280mm. It may form part of a Roman road between Wilderspool and Dunham.

Full Description

A possible section of a Roman road found at Lymm in 1969. The apparent remains of a road were found approximately ten inches below the surface at one edge of a field. Composed of gravel, pebbles It was composed of sandstone chippings mixed with sand with a thin discontinuous black layer near the base. A small piece of coarse pottery of indeterminate age was found below the surface of the deposit. The road was twenty-four feet wide and an average of eleven inches thick. Suggested as being on a road line from Wilderspool to Dunham. Starting at Wilderspool, east along Grappenhall Lane, Stockton lane, Weaste Lane, crossing under the M6 and across the field where excavation was carried out. Continues further east to join Eagle Brow, past Lymm Cross, along Pepper Street, Sutch Lane, crossing the Bridgwater Canal, along Stage Lane and back across the canal to Warrington Lane. Turning north-east at Agden to cross the River Bollin at Bollington Mill, along a path through Dunham Park to join the Manchester to Northwich road.

SJ 666 867. A possible roman road has been traced by between Wilderspool and Altrincham and a gravel road, approximately 25 feet wide, and running east-west, has been excavated. [D.S. 08/10/1969]

There is no surface indication of a road crossing the field at the above siting. [MHB 28/12/1971]

Roman Road, 3km west-south-west of Lymm (SJ666 867); a road surface c.7.3m wide was exposed on the postulated line of a Roman Road from Wilderspool to Manchester.
