Summary

Logboat found in 1971 at Gateworth sewerage works, near Sankey Bridges. The boat is made from elm and was found at a depth of 3.3 metres in coarse sand. The end is rounded and has a protruding 'beak' through which there is a horizontal hole. A radio carbon date of 1000AD has been given.

Full Description

Logboat found on 25 Feb 1971 at Gateworth sewerage works, near Sankey Bridges.Boat made of elm at a depth of 3.30m in coarse running sand. Only c.1.50m of the prow remained, which was spoon-shaped and half- round in cross-section with a raised rib cut across the floor. Boat was 0.80m wide and 0.50m deep (1). Measures 1.65m long x 0.81m maximum breadth and 0.51m deep.The end is rounded and has a protruding 'beak' through which there is a horizontal hole c.1.17m from one tip of the beak is a transverse ridge. Interpreted as a provisional canoe form by McGrail (2). Radiocarbon date 950 +/- 90 BP c.ad 1000 (Birm 269) (3).
