Summary

A section was cut through the North Cheshire Ridge Roman road at Stretton Church Hall. Here the width of the road was 14 m. There are ditches on either side of the road surface. The North Cheshire Ridge Roman Road has been traced for a length of over 12km. The alignment follows the crest of the outcrop of sandstone overlooking the Mersey valley to the north. It is made up of adjoining straight lengths of road to keep close the crest of the ridge. Unusually for Roman roads in Cheshire there were drainage ditches along each side of the road.

Full Description

Section through North Cheshire Ridge Roman road at Stretton Church Hall. Width of metalling was 14 m. (7). Aug 1971 - During pipelaying ditches & scattered fragments of stone layers were observed. In Dec 1971 a section across the road was cut, revealing the two edges of the Roman road, with their accompanying ditches. A further small trench, 64m to E detected the western edge of the road (1).
