Full Description
Winwick Hall. The rector of Winwick was from before the time of the Conquest also the lord of the manor. The lords of Makerfield enumerated Winwick as a member of their see & the only lay owners were the Southworth family. The lease of the rectory by absentee persons resulted in the hall being occupied by the lessee or steward. From beginning of 17th century rectors were usually resident. Hall sold to County Council (1). Winwick Hall or rectory with a park. The rector is lord of the manor and the whole township of Wimwick belongs to the church, except half-an-acre of land belonging to the free school. A court-leet and a court-baron are held for the manor of Winwick, on behalf of the rector, annually in the month of June (2). Hall demolished pre 1955 (3).
