Monument record 1870/1 - Duddon Mill, Nineteenth Century Watermill

Summary

A watermill for the grinding of wheat into flour built in 1820. The mill building stood to the immediate north-east of the mill pond. Historic maps indicate that the mill had gone out of use by 1898, but other sources say the mill stopped working in 1930. The mill building was already ruinous when described in 1968 as having unusual semi-circular windows. The mill pond had silted up by this date too. Modern LIDAR survey shows that the mill building has been demolished, though part of the mill pond has been re-excavated.

Full Description

<1> Norris J.H., 1968, The Water-Powered Corn Mills of Cheshire, p.64 (Article in Journal). SCH6001.

A partly demolished ruin with semi-circular, arched windows, unusual in a mill, and a date of 1820. The mill stopped working approximately 1930 and the mill pond is now dry and used as a fox covert. The mill wheel was probably high breast or overshot, circa 13 feet in diameter, and is understood to have been constructed partly of wood and partly of iron, as was the machinery, driving three pairs of stones.

This map clearly depicts the L-shaped mill pond on the course of the brook, whose channel acts as the overflow. The probable dam is crossed by mill lane, and the mill buildings are located on the immediate north-west along with the tail race.

<4> Ordnance Survey, 1896-1898, Ordnance Survey First Revision County Series (Epoch 2) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ5165, 1898 (Maps and Plans). SCH3848.

The mill is labelled disused.

The mill building is no longer extant. The mill pond has been partially re-excavated.
