Monument record 438/3 - St Elphin's Church

Summary

St Elphin's Church may have developed from a pre-Norman foundation. It is a very rare dedication and there is some dispute as to whether the name 'Elphin' derives from a British original (such as Alphinus) or whether it derives from a British Saxon name Aelfwine. In the former case, the original foundation would have been before the 7th century, while the latter would suggest a Saxon foundation. Of the old building, only the chancel remains dating to the 14th century, with a restored crypt beneath. The church was besieged by Parliamentary troops in 1643 and damaged. There were considerable 19th century additions such as the wide nave, wide aisles, chapels, crossing tower and spire. The church is sandstone built with a slate roof. There are some medieval monuments inside in addition to some of the 18th and early 19th centuries.
