Summary

19th century excavations on the site of a medieval motte revealed a layer of clay, earth and sand, 3ft thick containing a number of 17th century military relics. Tradition says that the existing disused mound was raised higher by the Parliamentarians besieging the town in 1643 to place a cannon on it.

Full Description

1841 - Excavations by Kenrick on site of medieval motte. At the surface was a layer of clay, earth and sand, 3ft thick containing a number of 17th century military relics. Tradition says thast the existing disused mound was raised higher by the Parliamentarians besieging the town in 1643 to place a cannon on it (1).
