Monument record 438/0/2 - St Elphins's Well

Please read our .

Summary

Site of St Elphin's well. This is a possible medieval holy well. The 1849 Ordnance Survey map shows St Elphin's 'Bath' as small group of buildings adjoining the west side of a well enclosure. The well was later contained in a school caretaker's house, but was accessible beneath an ornamental tower attached to the house. This was demolished around 1924 and the well then stood on waste ground. In 1971 the well was examined and despite extensive later refurbishing the core of the well was shown to be medieval. Problems with the water table and extensive 19th century alterations have prevented examination of the earlier phases in detail.
