Summary

Culcheth had its own chapel of ease since c.1528, due to the inconvenient distance to Winwick church. ( A Chapel of Ease is an outpost of another church for those who live far way from the main church) In 1662 Winwick was too large, so the 4 Culcheth estates of Culcheth, Holcroft, Risley & Peasefurlong were made into a separate civil parish, but still within the ecclesiastical parish of Winwick. The church was rebuilt in 1743, as a plain brick structure. In 1845 a separate ecclesiastical parish of Culcheth & Kenyon was created and the incumbent of the church was styled Rector of Newchurch. The Church was destroyed by fire in April 1903 and was rebuilt in the following year in the Norman style.
