Full Description
Medieval Chapel of Ease in Stretton area. "In this town of Stretton is an ancient Chapel of ease, within the parish of Great Budworth, called Stretton chappel; but it is now very ruinous, and in decay, 1666 (1). St Matthew's Church, Stretton was erected in 1827, on the site of the ancient Chapel of Ease, and was restored in 1870 under Sir Gilbert Scott (2). Church of 1870, replacing a Commissioners' Church of 1826-27, by Philip Hardwick. Chancel probably stands on Hardwick's foundations. Full architectural description ref (3).
