Summary

The White Cross is referred to in a manuscript dating from 1465 and is believed to have lain to the west of the town. An Ordnance Survey map dating from the mid nineteenth centry record a number of White Cross place-names adjacent to Little Sankey Green.

Full Description

<1> Beamont W, 1849, Warrington in 1465: As Described in a Contemporary Rent Roll of the Legh Family, in the Possession of Thomas Legh, Esquire, of Lyme Park, p.23 (Book). SCH3689.

The White Cross is referred to in a manuscript dating from as being located near to a property owned by the Leghs of Lyme. It is described as ‘near to the White Cross, which stands in the way leading from the aforesaid town as far as the bridge of Sankey’. Includes a map of Warrington which depicts Le Whyte Cross at the west end of Sonkey Gate.

The site of this cross is marked on the Ordnance Survey map as half a mile west of the centre of the town close to Bank Hall and three hundred yards to the north of the river. It was reputedly the site of the annual Calf Gin fair (see 5).

This map depicts three adjacent buildings of Bank Quay Road and Sankey Green Lane named White Cross, White Cross House and White Cross Bank.
