Summary

Lower Carden Hall, Tilston Lane is a Grade I listed building and formerly the home of the Leche family. The north wing dates to the 15th century or earlier and was enlarged and refronted in the early 17th century. The south cross-wing was built in the mid 16th century and there were alterations and additions to the rear by Carden Estates in the late 19th century. It is an oak framed building with plaster panels on a sandstone plinth. The front gable of the cross-wing has exceptionally heavy timbers with rectangular panels to the lower storey and chevrons to the upper storey and gable. The early Elizabethan oak-framed structure of the cross-wing has not been altered much. Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the 17th century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to create solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the 17th and 18th centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting.
