Full Description
Possible section of Roman road revealed 140m N. of St Elphin's Church. Composed of a compact layer containing a rusted iron artefact & several abraded sherds of red coarse ware. It is 1.5m below present ground surface & topped by a layer of varying thickness of grey sand with dark soil containing pottery of various periods. The layer increased in thickness from 20 to 100m across the trench & was formed of large pebbles, broken sandstone & gravel. Lay on a 150mm layer of softyellow sand. Alignment could not be determined but is suggested as part of the agger of Warrington-Wigan road (Margary 70b) (1). This is not on the alignment of road 614/1.
