Summary

The manor of Middleton was originally part of the medieval administrative area of Makerfield. In 1212 it was divided into 4 equal shares, each of which provided in turn a judge at the court of Newton. The manor was then further divided and the main part was acquired by the Southworth family. Two junior branches were seated at Middleton and Houghton Peel.

Full Description

The manor of Middleton was included in the fee of Makerfield. It was assessed as one & a half ploughlands and in 1212 was held in thegnage by a total rent of 20s in 4 equal shares, each of which provided in turn a judge at the court of Newton. Tha manor was further partioned later. The main part was acquired by the Southworth family. Two junior branches were seated at Middleton and Houghton Peel. Middleton was retained with Southworth and descended with it to the present (1).
