Summary

Logboat dredged up in early Sept 1893 during work on the new course of the Mersey across Arpley Meadows. The boat lay about 20 metres north the former bank of the river, at a depth aroun 5.5 metres below the ground. The boat was 10ft 8 1/2inches (3.3 metres long) long and 2ft 9 inches wide (0.9 metres). On a plan reporting this find to the east of the boat is a note - 'Rough piles with brushwood behind seen at low water' - no further details. The boat is made of oak with one beaked end and one flat end. A radiocarbon date of around 1190AD has been given

Full Description

Logboat dredged up in early Sept 1893 during work on the new course of the Mersey across Arpley Meadows. It lay c.20-25yds N. of the former bank of the river, at a depth of c.18ft below ground. Boat is 19ft 8 1/2ins long x a minimum of 2ft 9ins wide & c.14ins deep. On a plan reporting this find c.25ft E. of the boat is a note - 'Rough piles with brushwood behind seen at low water' - no further details (1). Examined by McGrail 1974. Length now 3.12m (10ft 3ins), so 0.14m has apparently been lost. Made of oak, rounded traverse section with rounded ends. Sides taper away from beaked end. Classified as canoe form. Radiocarbon date 760 BP+/-60 ie c.ad 1190 (Q-1390)(2)(3).
