Summary

The Warrington Blue Coat School was founded by Mr Allen, who gave a legacy to apprentice poor boys in 1665. Gallows Acre was the first land acquired for this charity in 1674 and the school was built here. Peter Legh gave houses and land for an elementary school in 1709. The school started in 1711 with 24 boys and at the age of 14 the boys were apprenticed from funds given by John Allen in 1677 and gifts of land made in 1692 and 1705. The site is now occupied by modern buildings.

Full Description

Warrington Blue Coat School. Founded by Mr Allen, who gave a legacy to apprentice poor boys in 1665. Gallows Acre was the first land acquired for this charity in 1674 & the school was built here. Peter Legh gave houses & land for an elementary school in 1709. School started in 1711 with 24 boys & at the age of 14 the boys were apprenticed from funds given by John allen in 1677 & gifts of land made in 1692 & 1705(1)(2)(3). Site now occupied by modern buildings(4). Warrington Blue Coat School. Moved to this site in 1780. Site now occupied by modern buildings(1).
