Summary

There are records of a school master here in 1592 but not necessarily a school building. The School was built partly in the churchyard and was in existence by 1682 as an endowment of 5 pounds per annum given by John Leigh of Oughtrington is recorded in this year. There are later records of endowments and land acquisitions amd the Tithe Award Schedule of 1837 gives details of property held on behalf of school. In 1864 the grammar school moved to the premises of the Ladies Free School in Booth's Hill. The original school building was demolished in 1896.

Full Description

Lymm Grammar School. There was a school master in 1592 but not necessarily a school building. Building was built partly in the churchyard & was in existence by 1682. Endowment of 5 pounds p.a. given by John Leigh of Oughtrington in 1682 drawn from the rent of a farm. Part of the farm's land lying near Massey Brook went to the school. 1697 - William Domville of Lymm Hall gave 200 pounds to school & in 1698 he & Sir George Warburton of Arley enclosed & rented out common land in Lymm for the school's benefit. In 18th century further financial endowments & acquisition of land. Tythe Award Schedule of 1837 gives details of property held on behalf of school. 1864 Grammar School moved to premises of the Ladies Free School in Booth's Hill. Original school building demolished in 1896 (1).
