Summary

Between 1867-72 quarrying for sand revealed 2 roman feeding bottles for infants which contained cremations. In 1895 a dug out oak coffin, lined with sheet lead containing a human skeleton was found in the north bank of Manchester Ship Canal. A further urn containing a cremation was found near this.

1867-72 - During quarrying for sand, 2 feeding bottles for infants found containing cremations

During May's excavations 1895-1905, to S. of walled area on either side of a minor road were 4 cinerary urns with cremations (c.SJ 61178626)

Oct 1895 - dug out oak coffin, lined with sheet lead containing a human skeleton found at depth of 6ft fron top of N.bank of Manchester Ship Canal & 120 yards E. of Wilderspool Bridge (Area SJ 613864).

An 'Upchurch' cinerary urn containing a cremation was found 3ft below surface near the coffin

1976 - Grave with lead-lined oak coffin found during repairs to N bank of Manchester Ship Canal, 750m SW of Loushers Lane site. Five sheets of lead were attached to oak base with iron nails. Beneath lid of coffin were fragments of crushed bone. Exact site to be given in final publication
