Full Description
May 1973 - partial section of a Roman road in Lower Stretton revealed during construction of M56. Eastern edge & crown of cambered agger were clear & road extended 10m to W. Road made up of cobbles up to 100mm in size set in red sand & laid directly on the surface of the natural red sandstone. A few pieces of gravel up to 13mm size indicated the original road surface, now mainly destroyed. Agger was 300mm thick, c.13m wide & 250mm below present ground surface (1).
