Full Description

Bronze Age Flat Axe. 'Bronze celt of the simplest form found at Rixton, near Warrington, ornamental with punched lines in a very unusual manner'.Exhibited at the Archaeological Institute, March 1st 1861, by Dr James Kendrick (1). Flat bronze axe from Rixton is 6.75 ins long and its width varies from 1.5 ins at the tang to 3.75 ins at the cutting edge.The implement shows slight flanges plus an incipient stop-ridge on the tang (2). A major gas pipeline passes NW-SE through the given NGR. In advance of construction, a geophysical survey was carried out. Located evidence for recent brick making. Fieldwalking produced a scatter of about 10 struck flints.
