The first part of Sankey name is possibly derived from a personal name and the second part means 'water', 'stream' or 'river'. The name is, therefore, derived from the brook which still flows through the district and into the Mersey. Sankey brook formed a boundary between Great Sankey to the west and Little Sankey to the east, and this division dates at least from 1325.
