Summary

A row of stone slabs were found in a garden in Booths Hill and an excavation revealed a 580ft length of wall. This may be the boundary wall of a medieval assart of arable land or a deer leap. On the east was a ditch 7ft wide. This sort of arrangement was usually developed to keep cattle or deer out of the arable land. It is probably of early medieval date. This may have been the first clearing of the area.

Full Description

Jan 1971 - row of stone slabs found in a garden in Booths Hill. Stones slightly inclined to the right with traces of a layer of smaller capstones laid horizontally on top. Further stones were found & excavation by Mr B Johnson in Dec 1971 revealed a 580ft length of wall. Possibly the boundary wall of a medieval assart of arable land or a deer leap. It consisted of a sunken wall of sandstone blocks c. 18 x 28 inches & 2-8inches thick & weighing c.1 cwt each. There appeared to be a capping of broken sandstone c.3ft wide & 6 inches thick which may have been the footings for a dry-stone wall to give extra height. On the E was a ditch 7ft wide sloping up from its base on the side away from the cultivated or enclosed land. Usually to keep cattle or deer out of the arable land. Probably of early medieval date. This may have been the first clearing of what was to be come Lymm's daughter settlement at Lymm Booths (1)&(2).
