Full Description
March 1960 - Roman road cut by petrol pipe line. Road appeared in section in the side of the trench. It was 18ft wide & its western edge coincided with the hedge line. Beneath the plough soil was a gently cambered surface of pebbles & sandstone chips resting on a layer of brown sand, which in turn rested on a thin black layer, possibly brushwood, which lay on a thin layer of light grey clay. To the east was a sand filled ditch. On the west was a similar, but shallower scoop, but this may have been a silted up ditch associated with the hedge. The cutting of this ditch may have disturbed the western edge of the road, so 18ft can only be the minimum width of the road (1).
