Monument record 436/1/6 - King Street Roman Road - Wilderspool to Stretton section

Feb 1974 - Roman road examined in a field opposite Stretton vicarage. Structure consisted of a layer of stones 15cm thick, laid on a subsoil of sandy marl above stiff clay. Surface was worn & irregular. Well defined eastern edge with a possible broad ditch or small pond on east. Western edge was ill-defined, but in a second trench 2m N of the first section a distinct western edge was found, indicating a surface width of 8.4 m (1).
