Summary

A section of King Street Roman Road was seen in a pipe trench north of Stretton vicarage in 1971. The road was made up of a 9inch (23cm) layer of gravel with stones up to 2ins (5 cm) in diameter and dark sandy soil, lying on a bed of harder gravel. There was no obvious edge. King Street Roman road runs between Wilderspool and Middlewich and then onto Chesterton in Staffordshire.

Full Description

May 1971 - observations in a pipe trench of a section across Roman road immediately north of Stretton vicarage. Eastern edge of road located 30yds to west of the position marked on OS maps. The structure consisted of a 9inch layer of gravel with stones up to 2ins in diam & dark sandy soil, lying on a bed of harder gravel. No obvious edge. The eastern edge of the road lies 18ins below the present surface & a 20ft wide stretch can be recognised. Beyond a width of 30ft the road can no longer be traced (1).
