Summary

King Street Roman road runs between Middlewich - Wilderspool and Wigan. The Wilderspool to Stretton section was first investigated in 1831 when sections cut through the road at Wilderspool revealed a road consisting of layers of gravel and ashlar. Later sections have been cut revealing the route of this section of the road.

Full Description

King Street-Roman road from Middlewich-Wilderspool-Wigan.This section Wilderspool to Stretton c.SJ 611864 to 621822. 1831 - Beamont & Mr John Robson cut sections through the road in Wilderspool. Road consisted of layers of gravel & ashlar from 4-14 yds wide.Sections cut in Stoney Lunt Field (to N. of Old Quay Canal) & Town Field (to S.of Old Quay Canal).Fibulae,'fireplaces with ashes in them',vases & coins found at latter. c.1848 - Section of road found in Street Lunt Back field by Kendrick & Robson.Also a branch road pointing to the E, of which between 20 - 30yds were removed by a tenant c.4 years ago. 1848 - Matthew Lyon cut sections in fields to S.of Roman settlement, in Dog Kennel field to N.of Bridgewater Canal.To S.of Bridgewater Canal, 2 sections in Hull Carl field 15-20ft wide.Uncovered section 19.5ft wide in grounds of his home-Appleton Hall(1).Exact NGR not possible, for field names see (2). King Street - route traced by Hume 1849.South of Bridgewater canal, road discovered during building Mr Holbrook Gaskell's hay barn. In next field to S.-Hull Carl field - road sectioned by Lyon.Next field to S.-Gorse Hill, road discovered by Mr Sibson. Traces of road can be seen in both sides of a lane which cuts E-W across line of Roman road.Further S.on same line, road noticed at top of a stone quarry. Next appears in Mr Lyon's grounds near Appleton Hall.Next appears to E.of modern road & can be traced in the line of a footpath, hedge & field - 16.5ft wide.About 0.75 mile further S. & in a direct line the road reappears at a point called Stretton New Barn & 0.5 mile further S.near Mr Okell's in the Big Town field of Stretton (1).1896 - Section of road exposed.21ft wide & 4ft thick.Road composed of layers of sandstone, gravel, cobbles & concreted surface.NGR not specified (4).
