The road itself was made up of 5 inch pebbles topped by gravel. Another section was observed nearby which was composed of compacted sand and gravel with a layer of red clay. Full Description

1964 - Roman road sectioned at Appleton. Road layer was 6ins thick & 14ins below ground level, resting on a layer of clean orange coloured sand. Road layer made up of 5inch diam pebbles & topped by gravel. Another section was observed nearby showing the road to be 34ft wide, 1ft below ground surface & 2ft 6ins thick, composed of compacted sand & gravel with a layer of red clay, placed on a dirty brown sand layer which overlies soft red sandstone. The road gives the impression of being in two separate portions which suggests it may have been widened or rebuilt, or may represent a road fork (1).
