Summary

Kenyon Hall tumulus is recorded as the site of a bronze age round barrow. 19th century finds from the barrow include the remains of several pottery vessels and the a fragment of a bronze brooch. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

Kenyon Hall tumulus. 1826 - Bronze tongue of fibula & fragment of an urn found together on Mr Walpole's farm & now in Warrington Museum. Information originally from Mr Walpole, confirmed by Mr Beamont & communicated to Lancs & Cheshire Ant.Soc by Mr Madeley, Curator of Warrington Museum (1). No mention of tumulus in ref 1. 1887-1903 - Ref 2 states tumulus destroyed between these dates. It contained fragments of at least 3 cinerary urns, one of which contained the tongue of a bronze brooch. Remains of several cremations & a bronze pin also found in mound (2). Ref 2 gives grid ref SJ620949, but presumably same site. Ref 3 reports find of tanged awl from low barrow with urn & burnt bones.Site of barrow in Newchurch area, W. of Winwick Lane (3). Presumably same site.
