Summary

Myddleton Hall is a Grade II* listed building. The present building dates to 1658 with 19th century alterations. It has brick walls with a sandstone plinth. The roof has artificial stone slates. There is a datestone over door "1658 EH RAS". The manor of Middleton was originally part of the medieval administrative area of Makerfield. In 1212 it was divided into 4 equal shares, each of which provided in turn a judge at the court of Newton. The manor was then further divided and the main part was acquired by the Southworth family. Two junior branches were seated at Middleton and Houghton Peel.

Full Description

Myddleton Hall, Delph Lane, Houghton Green. The Manor of Middleton from which Houghton became separate later was included in the Fee of Makerfield. It was assessed as a ploughland-and-a-half and in 1212 held in thegnage by a total rent of 20 shillings in four equal shares. The Manor was further partitioned later, when the greater part was acquired by the Southworth family.Two junior branches of the dominant family were seated at Middleton and at Houghton Peel. Middleton was retained with Southworth and descended with it (1). Present building dates to 1658, altered internally early 19th century and later. Small brown bricks with sandstone plinth.
