Summary

Early Bronze Age flat axe from Risley. It was exhibited at the Society of Antiquaries by Dr Kendrick of Warrington Museum in 1873. Flat axes are the earliest forms of metal axes found in this country. They were cast in an open mould and have no flanges or loops for fixing to handles like later metal axeheads.

Full Description

Early Bronze Age flat axe from Risley. A plain tool 4.5ins long & 2ins across the broadest part of the cutting edge (1). Axe corroded, but probably 0.25ins thick (2). Axe exhibited at the Society of Antiquaries by Dr Kendrick of Warrington Museum in 1873. Find spot reported as 'Risby' (3). Ref 4 says 'Risby' should be read 'Risley' (4).
