Summary

Logboat found in 1922 in works on the north bank of the Mersey at the Corporation Electric Works. Boat is 11 ft 6 ins (3.5 metres) long with part of the bow broken off. 2 ft 11 ins (89 cm) wide and 20 ins (50 cm) deep. It was covered by 20 ft (6 metres) of river sand, mud and earth. Found in association were two rows of alder stakes forming a fore-runner of the later 'fish-yards' or traps It has a radiocarbon date of around 1072 AD.

Full Description

Logboat found 18 October 1922 in works on the north bank of the Mersey at the Corporation Electric Works.Boat is 11 ft 6 ins long with part of the bow broken off.2 ft 11 ins wide and 20 ins deep.It was covered by 20 ft of river sand, mud and earth.In association were two rows of alder stakes forming a fore-runner of the later 'fish-yards' or traps (1). Examined by McGrail 1974 - this logboat was called 'Fairclough' by Dunlop. Parts of broken end and three original treenails are missing.Identified as provisional canoe fasrm. Radiocarbon date 878 BP +/- 60 cad 1072 (Q 1393) (2) (3).
