Find Spot record 443 - Roman quern, Warrington

Upper stone of a quern found on the line of the railway through Latchford, not far from the station. Stone is sandstone, 17.5ins in diam, with a hopper hole in the middle & 2 handle holes. Bottom surface is flat (1). Stone is 17.75 ins in diam & 3.25ins thick with a slot on each surface for handles & is classified as Roman (2). Exhibited to Lancs & Cheshire Hist. Soc. in 1858 by Dr James Kendrick (3). Ref 5 gives grid ref SJ 625871 (5).
