The Ship Inn itself has been extended from its original form in stages. Originally a two storey four up, four down’ structure, most probably a cottage or small house. The original building had gable end chimney stacks and a broadly symmetrical front elevation, with a near-central front door and windows either side at each floor level. An extension to the west side with a sloping roof may have been part of the original build or may have been added soon after. It was probably a wash house.

A postcard from the early 1900s shows a brick building, painted white, with a slate roof and clay ridge tiles, a cast iron eaves gutter, and unpainted brick gable chimney stacks with buff-coloured terracotta chimney pots. The building has a central front door of standard width, with a painted sign above. The front windows are simple three light casements of a semi-oriel design. There are further single storey extensions to the property on the east side and to the rear which may date from the 1890s and 1960s.
