Summary

The manor of Woolston was first mentioned in 1094. It was held by the Woolston family until the 15th century when it passed by marriage to the Hawarden and Standish families until 1870, when the hall was sold.The families were Roman Catholics and the hall was searched by priest-hunters in 1584. A domestic chapel at the hall was served by Benedictine monks from the early 18th century until its demolition. The hall was pulled down in first half of 19th century, when it was described as an 'ancient brick edifice'. The site is now occupied by modern houses.

Full Description

The manor of Woolston was first mentioned in 1094.It was held by the Woolston family until the 15th century when it passed by marriage to the Hawarden & Standish families until 1870, when the hall was sold.The families were Roman Catholics & the hall was searched by priest-hunters in 1584 & a domestic chapel at the hall was served by Benedictine monks from the early 18th century until its demolition (1). Hall pulled down in first half of 19th century, when it was described as an 'ancient brick edifice' (2). Site now occupied by modern houses (3). Ref 4 suggests 13th century in origin (4). Woolston Hall stood at the junction of Hall Road and Barnfield Road, where Woolston CP School now is. Demolished in the 1960s (6).
