Please read our .

Summary

Ancient ford across the Mersey. It is situated in flat pastures and formed by a shoal of gravel upon a bed of marl around 27 metres wide. In a dry summer it had only around 60 cm of water on it. This ford at Latchford was only means of crossing the Mersey prior to first bridge in around 1305. It is the nearest fordable point to the sea and determined the importance of the town. In 1195 the ford was enclosed and granted to the Boydell family who retained the right to convey passengers across the Mersey in 1308 and 1388. The ford was replaced by ferry and then bridges. The old course of the Mersey is still wet and marshy and a footpath crosses this old course of the ford on a raised level to the surrounding marshy area.
