Summary

Boteler Grammar School was founded in 1526 by Sir Thomas Boteler, Knight of Bewsey. It was a wealthy school with extensive property assets. A house in Warrington and adjoining croft were the original school house and the school master's house was in Bag Lane. The premises were rebuilt in 1688 and 1757. A new school was built in 1829 but demolished by 1862. The present buildings were opened in 1863 and there are no earlier remains surviving except two datestones from earlier rebuilding in 1688 and 1736.

Full Description

Boteler Grammar School founded c.1526 by Sir Thomas Boteler, Knight of Bewsey. Foundation indenture grants a house in Warrington & an adjoining croft as the school house(1)(2). School master's house was in Bag Lane. Premises rebuilt in 1688 by Samuel Shaw & in 1757 by the Rev E.Owen. New school built 1829 which together with master's house was demolished in 1862. Present buildings were opened in 1863(3). No earlier remains in present structure, which is 19th century & now used as a works depot. Two date stones incorporated in present structure - '1688 Samuel Shaw AM' & '1736'(4).
