Find Spot record 996 - Roman lead weight, Alvanley

A Roman lead weight was found near Alvanley in 1955 & subsequently presented to the Grosvenor Museum by Dr J.D.Bu'lock. It has on the face 4 deeply punched digits indicating a nominal value of 4 unciae. Its present weight is 1688.1 grains, comparing very closely with the nominal figure of 1683.3 (1). The weight was found by Mr George Hadfield of Helsby, whilst picking potatoes in June 1955. The location is 6m from the SW hedge of a small field (2). Weight is 1.5ins diam & 0.3ins thick (3).
