Monument record 812 - Darley Hall moated site

Please read our .

Summary

This is a Scheduled Monument. The site consists of a rectangular island with a low flat platform in its eastern quadrant. The island is surrounded by a waterlogged moat which survives well on three sides. The 1695 estate map of Oulton Lowe shows an island surrounded by moat with access across the south east arm. It shows that the island was originally occupied by Darley Hall with outbuildings to the southeast of the moat. The present Darley Hall was built on the site of these outbuildings. Moated Sites are characterised by a waterlogged ditch that encloses a platform of land where buildings were built though they were also used for horticulture e.g. orchards. They were most popular in medieval times though not necessarily for the defensive advantages of being on an island as they were also seen as a sign of prestige. There are approximately 6000 across England with over 200 moated sites in Cheshire alone.

Full Description

Three sides of moat are well preserved, but only a fragment of the 4th side remains (1). Moat is wide and water-filled. Moat recently cleaned out and platform recently under cultivation according to farmer (9). Site consists of rectangular island 65m x 54m, with a low flat platform in its E quadrant. Moats SW and NW arms are 13-18m wide, while NE arm is 34m wide. 1695 estate map of Oulton Lowe (Darley demesne) shows island surrounded by moat with access across SE arm.
